In order to raise awareness of biological importance of insertions and deletions as genomic variants, we have introduced a scientific challenge: The Long Indel Contest.
The goal is to find long insertions and deletions up to 1024 base pairs in length, based on human Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data and reference based alignment. Find the longest insertion or deletion using human genomic data with one of the standard human reference genomes (hg18, hg19) and win US$500.
Who can participate? Individual scientists or researchers who are analysing human NGS data.
Deadline: Submissions are due not later than March 31, 2013.
The submission must include:
- a short description of the project
- the reference genome
- the computational analysis with such detail that it can be reproduced by the judges during the verification process, including all settings and version number of the software
- the inserted or deleted sequence
- internal LIMS identifier or similar for the data
- Sequencer used (e.g. Illumina, Ion Torrent, Roche 454)
- the participants name, phone number, email address and institute or company.
Participants can update their submission at any time, prior to the deadline. Submissions will be reviewed in the order received.
Contest Rules:
- The analysis must be done on experimental data obtained by next generation sequencing equipment, and carried out using Omixon Target.
- At the time of submission a screenshot of the view of reference based alignment with a pile-up of the supporting short reads need to be submitted. All reads supporting the insertion/deletion must be seen in their full length. For the purpose of this contest large genomic rearrangements such as translocations qualify.
- The evaluation of the entries is the sole responsibility of judges appointed by Omixon.
- Contestants will retain all rights to the data used in the analysis for submission. The raw data does not need to be submitted to enter the competition. However, the origin of the data and the reproducibility of the analysis will be verified for the winning entries. Once selected as a winning entry, the contestants must make the minimum amount of short read data and reference information available for the judges, under material transfer or non-disclosure agreement. The winning entries must meet the this evaluation criteria by Omixon.
